Training When Your Season is Cancelled

green-ball-on-sand-257970Unfortunately, COVID-19 has caused the cancellation of many sports seasons. From Little League baseball to the NBA, high school track to the Summer Olympics, athletes across the globe are missing out on the competitive season they have been training all year for.

Hopefully, sports will return in the fall and winter. Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to compete in your sport next year. If so, you can take this opportunity to focus on training safely at home.

Choose The Right Type of Training

Typically, you would be focusing on in-season training, trying to avoid injury and stay strong. But if your season is cancelled, you’ll need to choose a different type of training.

  • If you play a fall sport, spend the summer in preseason training activities that are specific to that sport, like fast footwork drills for soccer.
  • If you don’t play a fall sport, switch into offseason training. Focus on building up general strength, power and speed.
  • If you played at all competitively in the winter or spring, spend about six weeks in post-season training. Let your body rest and heal a bit with lighter workouts before heading into offseason training.

Train Safely at Home

We cannot recommend that you go to a gym or team workout at this time. Exercising can cause a lot of droplets to enter the air, which may spread coronavirus. Healthy athletes may be asymptomatic carriers of the condition.

Instead, do your best to stay in shape at home. If you are able, invest in free weights for lifting. Go on runs to boost your speed and cardiovascular performance. Get creative and speak to your coaches or athletic trainers for more ideas.

Stay Mentally Strong

You may be feeling grief for your missed competitive season or anxiety that you won’t be able to perform your best. That’s normal. If you are feeling depressed or anxious, please find the support you need from friends, family or your teammates or certified professionals. You are not alone; we will all be together again to cheer each other on and reach for new personal bests.
